MSHA Reports 25th Fatality of 2024

MSHA reported that on April 13, a front-end loader operator at Martin Marietta Materials’ Morgan County Quarry in Buckhead, Ga., drowned, lying face down in a pool of water. MSHA reports final fatality of 2023

MSHA reported that on Dec. 14, 2023, a contractor at Beck Street, Salt Lake, Utah, died while delivering parts to the mine when an all-terrain telehandler pulling cable tipped over, striking him. Full story.

MSHA reported that on Nov.13, a pit wall at Wrens Plant, Jefferson, Ga., collapsed engulfing an excavator operator while he was outside of the excavator. This is the 37th fatality reported in 2023, and the first classified as “Fall of Face, Rib, Side or Highwall.” Full story.

MSHA reported that on Aug. 21, a crusher lid that was being moved into place at Portable Crusher #2, Pueblo Colo., struck a miner when the rigging broke. The miner died from his injuries on Aug. 23. MSHA reported that on July 17, a miner at Holcim’s Swampscott Quarry, Essex County, Mass., died while performing repairs on a gyratory crusher. When a component was being suspended by a crane, a lifting eye welded to the component broke free striking the miner. Full story.

MSHA reports 24th fatality of 2023

MSHA reported that on June 22, a contract bulldozer operator at Vulcan Materials’ Chula Vista, Calif., quarry died when the bulldozer he was operating backed off the edge of a highwall. The bulldozer operator was clearing the bench in preparation for drilling and blasting and had removed the berms along the edge. Full story.

MSHA reported that on May 22, a miner died at RiverStone Group’s Ralls County, Mo., operation when the haul truck he was operating overturned, when the edge of the bank at a dump point gave way. The haul truck landed on the roof of the cab. Full story.

Brucejack resumes ops after fatal accident

MSHA reports 15th fatality

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) reported that on June 20, 2022, a 50-year-old miner at a Lhoist Group plant in Virginia died when the excavator he was operating underground slid over an elevated loading pad and was engulfed by lime dust.  This is the 15th fatality reported in 2022, and the fifth classified as “Machinery.” Read full article.

MSHA reports 12th fatality
