Brazilian-focused, UK-based Horizonte Minerals has awarded the engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) contract for its Araguaia ferronickel project to engineer AFRY’s Brazilian business division Pöyry Tecnologia.
The contract scope involves the provision of a comprehensive range of services across EPCM, project management and commissioning, but further details were not released.
Horizonte did confirm that Pöyry was selected via a competitive global tender process.
The miner said that, in line with the EPCM contract, it has been building an owner’s team to work in tandem with the new partner. Mike Drake, as head of projects, will lead a group of 85 from its Belo Horizonte and Conceição do Araguaia offices.
Horizonte CEO Jeremy Martin said it has been working with the local Pöyry team for several months in its project execution planning phase to ensure a smooth transfer to the construction phase.
“Araguaia will be delivered according to an EPCM strategy, in partnership with AFRY. The quality of the Araguaia project, the relevance of the nickel industry in the clean energy transition and Horizonte’s high sustainability standards has enabled us to secure the industry’s leading talent.”
