Rio Tinto has resumed its iron ore port operations after Tropical Cyclone Narelle recently passed over Western Australia’s Pilbara region. Its four port terminals closed – East Intercourse Island, Parker Point, Cape Lambert A and B – on 24 March.

The miner said its employees remained safe and unharmed during the weather event.

Ship loading at East Intercourse Island, Parker Point and Cape Lambert B recommenced on 28 March. Damage to Cape Lambert A is currently being repaired, with shipping at that facility expected to recommence soon.

Rio Tinto said that recent weather events, including Tropical Cyclone Mitchell in February, are estimated to have impacted iron ore shipments by approximately 8 million tonnes. The company has identified a pathway to recover around half of these losses.

Pilbara iron ore shipment guidance for 2026 remains unchanged at 323–338 million tonnes.Source: Rio Tinto
