The Copper Mark announced two more Peruvian mining sites have earned the distinction as the country takes a major step toward assured responsible production.
In Peru, five mine sites have achieved The Copper Mark: Mine Justa (Marcobre), Cerro Verde (Freeport-McMoRan), Condestable (Southern Peaks Mining), and ), Cuajone and Toquepala (Southern Peru Copper). In addition, the Ilo smelter unit at Southern Peru also earned The Copper Mark.
The Cuajone and Toquepala mines are also producing molybdenum and have received The Molybdenum Mark. This means, that combined with Cerro Verde, 60% of national molybdenum production in Peru now comes from independently assessed responsible producers.
“Our framework provides a structured approach towards achieving responsible mining practices, offering clear guidelines and benchmarks for its users,” said Executive Director of The Copper Mark Michèle Brülhart.
“By adhering to these standards, participants not only mitigate environmental impacts but also foster positive social outcomes, contributing to the well-being of local communities and stakeholders.”
Furthermore, The Copper Mark’s independent assurance framework enhances the competitiveness of Peruvian copper, molybdenum and zinc in the global market, catering to the growing demand for responsible produced minerals.
