L&H installs one of the biggest vertical turning lathes in North America

L&H Industrial has officially commissioned one of the largest Vertical Turning Lathe (VTL) in North America, significantly expanding its precision machining capabilities to support the mining, oil and gas, power generation and heavy equipment industries.

This groundbreaking investment, installed at L&H’s Tempe, Ariz., facility, is designed to machine some of the largest industrial components in the world, ensuring optimal performance and longevity for critical assets.

L&H’s new VTL boasts record-breaking specifications, making it a rarity in the global market:

  • Table diameter: 27 ft. (8,230 mm).
  • Maximum swing: 41.5 ft. (12,650 mm).
  • Turning height: 16.8 ft. (5,080 mm).
  • Maximum workpiece weight: 250 tons (500,000 lbs.)
  • Advanced live tooling for milling, drilling and tapping.

This machine is built to support the world’s largest industrial equipment, machining massive components with unrivaled precision and efficiency. The installation of this state-of-the-art machine was a two-year engineering feat, requiring:

  • 21 semi-truck loads to transport the machine’s components to Arizona.
  • An 80- x 80- x 22-ft. foundation, reinforced with moer than 1,500 cu. yd. of concrete weighing over 6.1 million lb.
  • A complete power infrastructure upgrade to meet the machine’s advanced operational requirements.

L&H Industrial partnered with industry leaders, including Team Machine, who led the disassembly, transport, and installation, and Unisorb, who constructed the massive foundation to support a machine of this size.

By integrating this cutting-edge technology, L&H Industrial enhances its ability to manufacture critical components for heavy industries that run the large equipment or massive assets across their operations. The new VTL enables faster production times, reduced handling, and unparalleled machining accuracy, providing cost savings and improved uptime for customers.

As one of the few companies in North America with a VTL of this scale, L&H Industrial now offers machining capabilities that are nearly impossible to find elsewhere. This investment reduces transportation costs, minimizes downtime, and ensures the highest quality manufacturing for critical industries.

“This is a major milestone in our company’s ongoing commitment to innovation and excellence,” said Kaela Torres, engineering manager for L&H Industrial’s Tempe, Ariz., location who oversaw the project. “The size, scale and precision of this VTL make it a game-changer for heavy industry manufacturing worldwide.”For more information, visit www.lnh.net.
