Since launching in June 2020, India’s Commercial Coal Mine Auction has successfully sold 91 coal and lignite mines. Six of these mines have already started producing coal and three more are expected to begin production in a couple of months.
The Ministry of Coal has so far completed seven rounds of the transparent online auction. It said the ongoing eighth round, which includes 39 coal mines, has witnessed an overwhelming response from the industry since launching on 15 November. The ninth tranche was launched last month, and offers 31 coal mines in four states – Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Telangana.
The government agency said mining from the already auctioned sites is estimated to bring an annual revenue of Rs. 33,343 crore, considering production at an aggregated peak rate capacity level of 220.90 million tonne per annum. Once these coal mines are fully operational, they will generate employment for around 300,000 persons, directly and indirectly.
