Coal production in India recently crossed 900 million tons – an unprecedented milestone, setting the stage for the country to hit 1 billion tons by 31 March.
The Indian government said that the country has an ample coal stock of around 85 million tons, with domestic coal-based power plants having around 43.28 million tons in reserves.
“The sufficient coal stock and record-breaking coal production facilitate meeting the escalating electricity demand, especially during peak consumption periods, thereby fostering stability in the energy sector and supporting economic growth,” the government said, noting that it also reduces dependence on coal imports.
The Ministry of Coal has undertaken strategic initiatives to propel the country’s journey toward sustainable development and self-reliance in the energy domain in alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Atma Nirbhar Bharat” or “self-reliant India.”
