An employee at the Moa Joint Venture open-pit mine in Moa, Cuba, has died due to a vehicle-related accident.
The operation, which mines and processes nickel from lateritic deposits, is a 50/50 partnership between Canada’s Sherritt International and Cuba’s General Nickel Company SA. The material is transported to Sherritt’s refinery in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada, where it is refined into high-quality finished nickel and cobalt.
Reuters reported that Sherritt is working with local authorities and has begun an investigation into the cause of the incident.
