Rio Tinto in Australia has signed a new agreement with UK refinery developer Green Lithium to develop a lithium supply chain, according to a Reuters report.
The new collaboration is intended to secure critical battery metal supplies for the manufacturing and automotive needs in the UK and EU.
“By building our refineries, we will accelerate the adoption of EVs and sustainable energy storage through the increased supply of low-carbon, battery-grade lithium chemicals,” said Green Lithium chief executive Sean Sargent.
The partnership positions both Rio and Green Lithium to capitalise on surging demand for electric vehicle metals. Rio Tinto had not released a public statement on the news at MNG press time.
