Soma Gold’s El Bagre gold complex in Colombia is now back to operating after a “civil disturbance” caused its workforce to be unable to work safely.
Officials said the civil disturbance had left roads leading to the site impassable. Its employees are now gradually returning to work, the company said, and its mining and milling operations will resume soon.
The unrest was first confirmed by Soma on 13 March, and at the time the company said the move to close was in the interest of its staff’s safety.
“The unrest has been caused by small alluvial miners rejecting and protesting against the government’s enforcement of the mining and environmental rules,” it said earlier this month.
“The general strike and protests are not aimed at legal underground operations, such as Soma’s mine and mill.”
El Bagre is made up of the La Ye and Los Mangos; La Ye has been in production since 2010 and Los Mangos since 2013.
