MMD Group Limited (MMD) has successfully completed the latest phase of its long-standing partnership with the state-owned Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) to deliver two new sizer stations for the Mae Moh lignite mine in Lampang Province, as the operation continues its transition from conventional crushing to modern mineral sizing technology.
The successful handover of Sizer Station 6 and Sizer Station 7 on 19 June marks another milestone in a relationship spanning more than 30 years. MMD has provided Mae Moh with sizer stations since 1993, and has delivered multiple units across successive development phases of the mine.
The latest project is part of EGAT’s broader overall plan to upgrade its material handling systems after approximately 40 years of reliance on conventional double-roll crushers. The company first engaged MMD in 2014 to evaluate alternative technologies that could reduce maintenance requirements, improve reliability, and lower operating costs while maintaining high production efficiency.
A key factor in EGAT’s decision was the opportunity to observe the MMD sizer technology operating at Hongsa Power, a large-scale lignite mine-mouth power project near the Thailand–Lao border, with mining operations and equipment duty profiles broadly comparable to those at Mae Moh. The installation’s successful performance under similar operating conditions demonstrated high reliability, lower power consumption, and significantly reduced maintenance requirements, ultimately reinforcing EGAT’s confidence in proceeding with the full-scale deployment of the technology at Mae Moh.
Each of the two new stations is designed to process an average of 1500 tonnes of lignite per hour and incorporates an MMD 1000 Series Sizer capable of handling a maximum feed size of 1500- x 1200- x 1000-mm and producing a controlled product size of 300- x 300- x 300-mm. The installation also includes associated feeding and conveying systems, providing a complete in-pit sizing solution tailored to EGAT’s operational requirements.
The delivery of the Mae Moh project demonstrates MMD’s ability to combine global engineering expertise with strong local execution. Manufacturing and engineering were coordinated across MMD’s international network, while local partners in Thailand supported structural steel fabrication and the integration of specialist electrical controls. This integrated approach enabled the project to be delivered safely and completed on schedule.
