Fatal accident at Rio Tinto Simandou project

Rio Tinto said an employee of a contracting company has died following an incident at the SimFer mine site in Nzérékoré, Guinea, on August 22.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues impacted by this tragic event as well as the wider community. We will offer all the support we can at this very difficult time and a thorough investigation will take place together with the relevant authorities to establish the causes of this tragic incident,” said Rio Tinto Chief Executive Jakob Stausholm.

All activity at the site is currently suspended.

Rio Tinto SimFer, a joint venture with the government of Guinea and Chalco Iron Ore Holdings, holds blocks 3 and 4 of Simandou. The SimFer mine is at the southern end of the Simandou mountain range in the Pic de Fon Forest.
