Rio Tinto said it has resumed operations at its East Intercourse Island (EII) facility at Dampier Port in Western Australia after being offline for over five weeks due to Tropical Cyclone Sean.
A railcar dumper at the port facility was flooded when the cyclone delivered record rain along parts of the Pilbara coastline in late January. The miner said dumper operation resumed last week with the first ship loaded on 3 March.
Rio Tinto mentioned in its recently released full-year results that operations at the Dampier and Cape Lambert ports were also impacted by Tropical Cyclones Tahlia, Vince and Zelia. Total losses from all four storms is anticipated to be about 13 million tonnes. Mitigation plans are in place to offset about half of this through the course of the year.
The miner noted that Pilbara iron ore shipment guidance for 2025 remains unchanged at 323 to 338 million tonnes.
